Knobs Flat Accommodation

For the trip to Milford Sound, we wanted to stay in Milford Sound so that we can take the early morning cruise.  However the only accommodation located in Milford Sound is expensive and no room is available for the date we are visiting.  The other popular option is to stay in Te Anau which is a 2-hour drive away.  After much searching, I came across Knobs Flat Accommodation.

Knobs Flat is located on the Te Anau Milford Highway approximately half way between Te Anau and Milford Sound.  It takes about an hour’s drive or 62km from Te Anau and about the same distance to Milford Sound.  This is just perfect for us as we wanted to stay nearer to Milford Sound for the early morning cruise.

To get to Knobs Flat, one just has to look out for the ‘Knobs Flat’ brown signage while driving on the Te Anau Milford Highway.  It’s definitely hard to miss it and the place is located just off the highway.  If missed, I guess one just has to double back as there’s only one road leading to Milford Sound from Te Anau.

Knobs Flat has only six cabins available for rental.  Therefore it’s essential to book early if one decides to spend the night here.  It also offers facilities for camper vans such as kitchen, shower, toilet and washing machine for laundry.

Knobs Flat is a fully self-sufficient place due to its remoteness.  However, do not expect to have shops or eateries nearby.  So it’s important to stock up on food supply in Te Anau.  The reception does stock up some supplies of canned and dried food in case guests need to purchase some food.

When I booked a small double unit, I was expecting a basic type of accommodation due to its remoteness.  However I was pleasantly surprised after I was shown the unit by the friendly manager.  The unit is rather spacious and very cosy.

It has all the creature comforts like any other modern accommodation except the absence of TV, radio, phone and internet.  The idea is to get back to a more simple life, have a relaxing stay and be close to nature.

The unit comes with a comfortable double bed, a dining table, a small wardrobe and a heater for the cold nights.

The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking a simple meal as it comes with 2 gas rings, a small gas grill, kettle, pots and a heavy iron cast frying pan!  Coffee, tea and milk are also provided.

The shower has very good water pressure and one does not need to wait long for the hot water which is consistently hot throughout the shower time.  The bath towels are thick and snowy white!

Everything in Knobs Flat is well thought out so that guests have a comfortable stay in this remote place.  Best of all, the whole place is very clean and well-maintained.  Knobs Flat is definitely a place I would not hesitate to come back to again :).

  1. Our Deluxe Lodge rooms are located on the 2nd floor with elevated views out across lake Te Anau with back drops of the Murchison and Kepler Mountains. With more of a flare for the modern as well as the natural, Deluxe Lodge Rooms combine a mixture of contemporary and rustic elements to achieve a very comfortable room style. Ensuite bathrooms merge porcelain and swamp kauri with the latest bathroom conveniences.
